ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE

Calouste Gulbenkian was a british businessman and philanthropist of Armenian origin that was involved, throughout his life, with many philanthropic activities including the establishment of schools, hospitals, and churches. He was an art lover and one of the biggest private art collectors of all times. In 1942, due to the war, he came to Lisbon and stayed until his death in 1955. He was in love with the city and the friends he made and, luckily for us, he decided to establish his collection here by building a private Foundation to promote arts, charity, education, and science throughout the world. Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation it is now among the largest foundations in Europe and it is one of the most important portuguese cultural foundation, nowadays. The buildings and parks themselves are well worth a visit, for they are an architecture mark, projected by Ruy Athouguia, Pedro Cid and Alberto Pessoa and one of our most important and known landscape architecs, Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles. Today the Foundation is celebrating its sixtieth birthday with a Gulbenkian Prize ceremony assigned to the Amazonas Sustainable Foundation and a piano concert with Gulbenkian Orchestra and the portuguese pianist, Mário Laginha. (starting 6.30 pm, free entrance) If you are in Lisbon don't miss Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. There is so much to see and appreciate in the museums and at the surrounding gardens, that you can enjoy even for a picnic. There’s a new one single 10€ ticket and Sunday afternoons are free.
