SURPRISING LISBON

While exploring Lisbon nowadays, take a glimpse at its old days. In the beginning of the XX century, building designers José Cândido d'Assumpção and Souza Arthur Júlio Machado initiated a meticulous work of collecting Lisbon's building facades and streets, on photo, for the Mayor of Lisbon. The purpose was to register and catalog the Lisbon's build, as happened through other forms of registration organized at the time by the local authority. Lucky for us, they've created a collection of around 3800 images that came to reveal not only the buildings but also the people, the faces, the monuments and the bustle; in other words, the city's lifestyle itself, at that time between 1898 and 1908. And this is the exhibition you can't miss "Lisboa, uma grande surpresa" / "Lisbon, a big surprise" until the 31st of December, at Arquivo Fotográfico Municipal.
